Welcome to the "Dawn Of Battle"

“In a society that hates me deeply and scars my soul daily, in countries that have branded me as an outcast and deprived me of any sense of belonging, in a world the foundations and rules of which I deny, being likeable would mean that I am starting to look like it.”

Tony Macalpine-Agent Cooper-Daniel Pique Live @ Kyttaro, Athens, Greece, 09-03-2012

Tony Macalpine-Agent Cooper-Daniel Pique Live @ Kyttaro, Athens, Greece, 09-03-2012

The week was coming to an end and there was only one more stop we had to make before reaching its epilogue. That stop was none other than the gig of Tony Macalpine at Kyttaro Club. Tony is one of my favorite guitarists of all time, a true master of the guitar as well as a great keyboard player, and I couldn’t wait to see him live for the first time. I like most of his projects, but his solo works are definitely on the top of my list. This tour was called “Dream Mechanism Tour 2012” and with him Tony had a bunch of excellent musicians like the ex-ANGRA drummer, Aquiles Priester, one of the top drummers of his era as well as a candidate for Mike Portnoy’s place in Dream Theater, bass player Bjorn Englen, who has toured with Yngwie Malmsteen as well as Uli Jon Roth and Quiet Riot, and last but not least, Nili Brosh, a very talented young guitar player who has played with Stu Hamm (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai), Guthrie Govan (ASIA) and Andy Timmons (Danger Danger). Tony had announced that he was going to play a few songs from his new record as well as some of his older stuff, but the greatest part was that he was going to play his extraordinary debut album “Edge Of Insanity” in its entirety.
The first disappointment was a sudden change of schedule. The gig was supposed to start at 21:00 and only a few hours before, the time changed to 20:00. I knew then that I’d have to miss the first support act, Daniel Pique, who was supposed to play between 20:15 – 20:30. The second disappointment came when I arrived at the gig. Agent Cooper, the second support act, who was originally scheduled to play between 20:45 – 21:30, had cancelled! So when I arrived at about 20:40, Tony was already on stage! I rushed in only to find myself disappointed again for a third time. Tony and the rest of the group were giving a helluva show in a crowd of… 30 people. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A guitar player of this caliber and should get a little more recognition, although the tough economic situation in Greece, along with a couple of other gigs in Athens that night (one of them was the legendary Arthur Brown) must have had their impact.
Tony played for an hour and a half and his performance was excellent. Another 20 people must have joined the gig during the show. The whole thing looked more like a “music seminar” than a normal gig. I don’t know the attendance on the rest of the tour but on that night, it was really short. But also the atmosphere was also “warmer”. Tony was unstoppable, he’s an actual “music instrument machine”, jumping from one instrument to another with total control and ease. Nili was a pleasure to watch, simply great playing beyond anyone’s expectations and what can you say about Bjorn… the guy was 100% into the gig, always dancing around while playing the bass; he was definitely bringing a very nice breeze to the whole concert. Aquiles on the other hand was playing like a maniac! During the middle of the show the band went on a very small break and he played an extraordinary drum solo which made the very few people in the club go totally crazy at that time.
Overally this was a very good show and the band, despite the fact that they had a ferry to catch in a few hours, stayed for a “meet & greet” with all the fans. They stood there for anyone to take their photo with them, signed autographs and talked about the tour among some other things. I only hope that they’ll come back real soon for another gig and not be affected by the small attendance of this one.

RAGE - André Hilgers Interview.

RAGE - André Hilgers Interview.

It's only a couple of days since the new RAGE album is out and  André shares a few words with us!

Elias: RAGE have been active for almost 30 years now and they're considered by many a "classic" German metal band. How is the metal scene in Germany and Europe right now for older bands?

André: Better than before, we are touring a lot and have still out fans outside.

Elias: You've always experimented as a band, adding new elements to your style, even during the 80s. Do you believe that not sticking in a certain "style" has helped the band and you as musicians?

André: We always do what we want, no compromises. Maybe that is our certain style. ;-)

Elias: I know that you plan to release your next album during the next months. Is it a concept album? Should we expect harder songs or more orchestral stuff?

André: No concept album, this album is without orchester or keyboards. Its very hard, direct and powerfull.

Elias: What are the main influences for the unique style of RAGE? Is there something in particular that has influanced you a lot in the new record?

André: We always try something new. Every album has new styles, some new ideas and so on. I think that is what Rage stands for.

Elias: Not many bands dare to experiment in their music unless they have at least 4 or 5 members. Has RAGE ever considered recruiting permanently another guitar or keyboard player?

André: No.

Elias: The addition of Victor Smolski, an excellent musician, has been vital for the band and most of his guitarwork is a "music-signature" for RAGE. What should the fans expect to hear in the new record?

André: The same, Victor always work on new things, sounds, guitar licks, solos, he worked very very hard for his unique style.

Elias: Although The 90s was a bad era for metal bands, RAGE had released some of their best and most commercial works. For example "XIII" and "Ghosts" had many new elements that added up to the music of RAGE. Have you got a special project for the future, or something else in mind that you would like to try as a band?

André: We split our orchester songs now tot he Lingua Mortis Band, now we have 2 bands in one. We will record the album later this year!

Elias: We're living in the era of internet and social media. How much has internet has helped the band?

André: I think there are 2 sides oft he story. It can help the newer bands and it can damage you.

Elias: Lately we've been hearing of a "crisis in the music industry". Are things still prominent for newer as well as older bands?

André: I think we have no problem with that. But for the newer bands it is still existing.

Elias: Last year you visited Greece with Grave Digger. What are your memories from that show and what do you think of the Greek fans?

André: We love the Greek fans, very powerfull in the music. It was amazing to play for the fans there. Hope we can come back later.

Elias: You have also planned a tour with TYR and COMMUNIC. In which countries are you going to play? Do you plan to visit Greece as well?

André: No Greece is not on the list. We play all around Europe and Japan. We work on an south America and Russia tour as well.

Elias: Where do you see RAGE ten years from now?

André: I hope at the same place with a lot more albums.

ARCTURUS LIVE @ Gagarin 205, Athens, Greece, 04-02-2012

ARCTURUS LIVE @ Gagarin 205, Athens, Greece, 04-02-2012

Another Saturday night and I started heading once more to one of the most classic places to see a gig in Athens, Gagarin 205. There are usually a million things to do and a million places to go on a Saturday night, but a metal concert is always the first priority in my book.
Balancing between black metal, gothic, prog-rock and folk, Arcturus is definitely not your everyday kind of band. This was their first gig after their reunion which took place during 2011 and most people didn’t exactly know what to expect. There was a certain tension between the band members in the past but their shows were always something really unique, even for someone who has being to numerous concerts. Their whole folk-ish black attitude, combined with certain videos and theatricals that the band does, is way more than the average fan can expect.
The show started on time and the band came on stage full of energy, while most of the crowd were already shouting the bands name out loud. The first song was “Evacuation Code Deciphered” and generally, there was a feeling of numbness from the crowd, which carried on for one more song. I can’t say that the crowd lost it’s energy because after the third song they were going wild again, most likely they were stunned from the bands performance. Arcturus knows their game very well and that is more than obvious when they are on stage. A fine blend of some of the best elements of black metal and art-rock, combined with the unique capabilities of the singing monster known as I.C.S. Vortex (God!) and presented through a whole theatrical scheme from the band, leads to extremely awesome results!
After another 2 songs came the time for “Chaos Path”, another song which uses a lot of different musical elements as well. The crowd was participating during the whole song, as well as the next two, “Demon Painter” and “Painting My Horror”. The band uses a video projector which adds a lot to their show. Even when the song is slower, you can combine the music with the images and travel into your own dimension for a while (with a little help from mr Vortex of course…)
Near the ending, where the band played some older, heavier stuff, the crowd was yelling more than ever and the band was really glad to receive that kind of appreciation, nearly after 5 years off stage. They already had a meet and greet before the show, but they also gave another meet and greet after the show as well. I had the chance to talk with them a little and they’re all very friendly and certainly not “divas” like a lot of people might think.
Generally it was a very good show, maybe not their best ever, but the sound was very good as well as the bands performance and interaction with the crowd. Certainly the attendance could have been a little better, but it was sufficient for the band to feel warmly welcomed. They’re already planning to release another full-length album during the year and we can only hope for the best!
